Book Blogger Hop & FF Friday

book blogger hop

The Book Blogger Hop was originally created by Jennifer from Crazy-For-Books in March 2010 and ended on December 31, 2012.

Luckily, Billy from The Coffee-Addicted Writer has relaunched the Book Blogger Hop. Each week the hop will start on Friday and end on Thursday. There will be a weekly prompt just like before. The hop’s purpose will remain the same as it will give bloggers a chance to follow other blogs, learn about new books, befriend other bloggers, and receive new followers to your own blog.

Q: How do you handle unsolicited books that appear in your mailbox?  Do you add them to your queue?  Do you write to the sender and explain you  didn’t ask for the book and are not sure when you will be able to read  and review the book?  Or do you simply not read the book at all? (submitted by Elizabeth)

A: I haven’t received any unsolicited books. I usually will receive an email, asking me whether I would consider reading his/her book. I’ve never add anyone just send me a book without my consent. However, if I did receive an unsolicited book, I would definitely consider reading it.

Q: Find a “new to you blogger” and feature their button on your post this week. Tell us why this blogger stands out to you.

A: I really enjoy reading Historical Fiction Connection. I love historical fiction and this blog posts wonderful review.

Q: Are you a book blogger purist?  Do you only have book related posts or  do you review/post on anything/everything that catches your eye?

A: Until recently I have been a book purist. However, last Monday, I started to post about Downton Abbey. I will keep that up until the end of the season and then I will resume my book activities. Oh, and I also blogged about our Walt Disney Trip from last summer.

A: How about just blog more. So often life just gets in the way. I, also, want to blog about books that are on my to be read list. I accept way to many review requests.

Q: During the holidays there were hundreds of blog hops with giveaways and  prizes.  How did you keep track of if you what, if anything, you won?

A: During Christmas, I hardly blogged at all; let alone entered in any giveaways. I had one giveaway early in December and that was it.

Q: Holiday Edition: What is your favorite book set around Christmastime?

7068650A: I’m sorry to say that I don’t read a lot of Christmas themed books. I wish I could say I have read A Christmas Carol; but I haven’t. However, for my book club I did read A Redbird Christmas by Fanny Flagg which was really good.

Q: Pick a book in your favorite genre that you’d recommend to a reluctant reader.

A: It is so hard to pick from just one genre; I don’t have just one favorite. Let’s see…I will pick historical fiction and my favorite of 2013.

The Queen’s Vow: A Novel of Isabella of Castille

I absolutely loved this book. It was so rich in historical detail. I have not read anything about her and it really got me to read more of Mr. Gortner’s books. It is wonderful and for my full review click here.

Q: When you are out of town, do you still participate in weekly memes or do you have your post scheduled to appear on your blog and perhaps check  back?  Or do you not participate at all?

A: If I’m out of town, I try to have a laptop with me or I will post ahead of time. I usually plan my posts a week in advance. But I also post on the fly.

Q: What book are you embarrassed to admit you LOVED? (try to think beyond Twilight).

A: I usually own up to everything I read. However, one of my guilty, and maybe embarrassing pleasures, is The Black Dagger Brotherhood. It has lots of smexy and crazy plots. It helped me through a difficult time and I will always have a place in my heart for this series.

Q: Are you in a book club?  How does your book club choose books?  How far in advance do you choose?

A: Yes and I love my book club. Our name is Books, Babes and Booze and we meet every month. We are currently working on our fourth year together. The hostess for that month chooses the book. It is totally her decision. We try not to pick anything over 500 pages and we are committed to read at least 100 pages even if we don’t like it. I always look forward to what the next will be. I love picking my book so I will choose months in advance. But some won’t pick one until it’s her month. It’s not that big of a deal. We are currently reading Heft by Liz Moore.

Q:  It is up to you to do a Kickstarter campaign for your favorite book!!! Who are you casting for the main characters?

A: I have to think about this one…how about…Most of my favorite books have already been made into a movie. I understand that A Discovery of Witches screenplay is being written but hasn’t been cast. I would cast Naomi Watts as Diana and Clive Owen as Matthew. How about that?

Q:  What got you started as a blogger? Everyone has a story/reason, what’s yours?

A: First, and foremost, I love to read! I think, my husband and I were watching The Pioneer Woman and said that I needed to start a blog. My answer, “what would I blog about?” “Well, you love to read.” I thought about for awhile and then one day, on a whim, I opened an account with Blogger, created a very simple blog and posted my first review, Bitten by Kelley Armstrong. After a year, I’m still at it with my own self-hosted WordPress blog. I love it!

Q: Bookshelf Tour. Give us a tour of your bookshelf.

A: I have ALL kinds of books on my bookshelves. I have several throughout my house; plus I have an electronic bookshelf on my Kindle. I love the classics (Jane Austen), historical fiction, Austenesque fiction, literary fiction and urban fantasy. I have a complete hardback set of Jane Austen and Harry Potter. I have lots of Sharon Kay Penman, Celia Holland and Philipa Gregory. My Kindle holds the majority of my urban fantasy collection with Kelley Armstrong, Jeaniene Frost, Ilona Andrews, Deborah Harkness, and Patricia Briggs.

Q: Book blogging is more than just reading. Who helped you set up or run your blog? Or did you do it all yourself?

A: I initially started on Blogger with a design template from Parajunkee Designs. After a year, I decided to self-host my own site with WordPress. I did such research and found Jenn at Munchkin Land Designs. She did everything! I love my design and she transferred everything over from my old Blogger site. I love my site and I’m so happy that I made the switch.
