THANKS FOR JOINING ME ON FRIDAYS FOR BOOK BEGINNING FUN!

Please join me every Friday to share the first sentence (or so) of the book you are reading, along with your initial thoughts about the sentence, impressions of the book, or anything else the opener inspires. Please remember to include the title of the book and the author’s name.

My Book Beginning:

17842038Love & Treasure by Ayelet Waldman

They found the train parked on an open spur not far from the station at Werfen. When they pulled up to the siding in their jeeps, Captain Rigsdale jumped out with a show of alacrity, but Jack hung back, eyeing the train. More than forty wagons, both passenger and freight. The nature of the cargo was as yet undetermined, but in this green and mountainous corner of the American Zone, a string a of boxcars was something Jack felt eager to explore.

From Chapter 1 of Love & Treasure which takes place in the modern day and in the aftermath of WWII.

I’m reading this book for an upcoming book blog tour and I’m really enjoying it so far. Reading novels that take place during and after WWII are incredibly emotional. This book deals with all of the treasures and possessions that were taken from Hungarians Jews by the Nazis and the guilt over how to deal with those possessions.

Q: When you enter a contest or request a book, how do you keep track of what the books are? or perhaps you don’t keep track and just remember what you entered or requested? (submitted by Elizabeth)

A: I don’t keep track of any requests or contests. When I enter a contest, it’s on a whim. If I win, it’s a complete and wonderful surprise. If I don’t win, it’s no big deal because I don’t remember entering because I didn’t track it. It’s the same with requests. I rarely make requests therefore I don’t need to track them. I do calendar all of my blog tours and the like; that way I don’t over schedule myself in any given month.

Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs

9460487A mysterious island. An abandoned orphanage. A strange collection of very curious photographs.

It all waits to be discovered in Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, an unforgettable novel that mixes fiction and photography in a thrilling reading experience. As our story opens, a horrific family tragedy sets sixteen-year-old Jacob journeying to a remote island off the coast of Wales, where he discovers the crumbling ruins of Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. As Jacob explores its abandoned bedrooms and hallways, it becomes clear that the children were more than just peculiar. They may have been dangerous. They may have been quarantined on a deserted island for good reason. And somehow—impossible though it seems—they may still be alive.

A spine-tingling fantasy illustrated with haunting vintage photography, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children will delight adults, teens, and anyone who relishes an adventure in the shadows

18126203Finn Rising by Paul W. Newman

Fin Rising is a romantic mystery and black comedy set in Ireland. Fin McGrath loves and fishes in equal measure, and when the twists of the present cause the questions of the past to arise suddenly, he begins to wonder where the truth lies. Will the dark twists of the past be finally revealed? Will Fin have everything or nothing? Will love be reborn or lost again, this time, forever?

Dark Fever by Karen Marie Moning1451694

“My name is MacKayla, Mac for short. I’m a sidhe-seer, one who sees the Fae, a fact I accepted only recently and very reluctantly.

My philosophy is pretty simple – any day nobody’s trying to kill me is a good day in my book. I haven’t had many good days lately. Not since the walls between Man and Fae came down. But then, there’s not a sidhe-seer alive who’s had a good day since then.”

When MacKayla’s sister was murdered, she left a single clue to her death, a cryptic message on Mac’s cel phone. Journeying to Ireland in search of answers, Mac is soon faced with an even greater challenge: staying alive long enough to master a power she had no idea she possessed – a gift that allows her to see beyond the world of man, into the dangerous realm of the Fae.

As Mac delves deeper into the mystery of her sister’s death, her every move is shadowed by the dark, mysteriou Jericho…while at the same time, the ruthless V’lane – an alpha Fae who makes sex an addiction for human women – closes in on her. As the boundary between worlds begins to crumble, Mac’s true mission becomes clear: to find the elusive Sinsar Dubh before someone else claims the all-powerful Dark Book – because whoever gets to it first holds nothing less than complete control both worlds in their hands.

HARRY DRESDEN LIVES!!!

After being murdered by a mystery assailant, navigating his way through the realm between life and death, and being brought back to the mortal world, Harry realizes that maybe death wasn’t all that bad. Because he is no longer Harry Dresden, Chicago’s only professional wizard.

He is now Harry Dresden, Winter Knight to Mab, the Queen of Air and Darkness. After Harry had no choice but to swear his fealty, Mab wasn’t about to let something as petty as death steal away the prize she had sought for so long. And now, her word is his command, no matter what she wants him to do, no matter where she wants him to go, and no matter who she wants him to kill.

Guess which Mab wants first?

Of course, it won’t be an ordinary, everyday assassination. Mab wants her newest minion to pull off the impossible: kill an immortal. No problem there, right? And to make matters worse, there exists a growing threat to an unfathomable source of magic that could land Harry in the sort of trouble that will make death look like a holiday.

Beset by enemies new and old, Harry must gather his friends and allies, prevent the annihilation of countless innocents, and find a way out of his eternal subservience before his newfound powers claim the only thing he has left to call his own…

Q: How do you handle unsolicited books that appear in your mailbox?  Do you add them to your queue?  Do you write to the sender and explain you  didn’t ask for the book and are not sure when you will be able to read  and review the book?  Or do you simply not read the book at all? (submitted by Elizabeth)

A: I haven’t received any unsolicited books. I usually will receive an email, asking me whether I would consider reading his/her book. I’ve never add anyone just send me a book without my consent. However, if I did receive an unsolicited book, I would definitely consider reading it.

Q: Holiday Edition: What is your favorite book set around Christmastime?

7068650A: I’m sorry to say that I don’t read a lot of Christmas themed books. I wish I could say I have read A Christmas Carol; but I haven’t. However, for my book club I did read A Redbird Christmas by Fanny Flagg which was really good.

Q: Pick a book in your favorite genre that you’d recommend to a reluctant reader.

A: It is so hard to pick from just one genre; I don’t have just one favorite. Let’s see…I will pick historical fiction and my favorite of 2013.

The Queen’s Vow: A Novel of Isabella of Castille

I absolutely loved this book. It was so rich in historical detail. I have not read anything about her and it really got me to read more of Mr. Gortner’s books. It is wonderful and for my full review click here.

Kid Lit Giveaway Hop Holiday Extravaganza

Kid Lit Hop

Youth Literature Reviews and Mother Daughter Books Reviews are back with another Kid Lit Giveaway Hop! This time around is our Holiday Extravaganza. Everyone will be featuring a holiday themed book. I absolutely love the holidays. For me, it is Christmas; celebrating the birth of Jesus is such a joyous time for my family. As always, I will be giving away a Barefoot Book. Babushka is one of my favorite Christmas stories. I remember when I first read Babushka, I cried. It is such a beautiful story. I love it and I want to give it to you!

babushka_pb_wBabushka

Meet Babushka, a woman who is so busy focusing on the little things, that she hardly notices the miraculous events going on around her. This touching Christmas story shows that the more you give away in love, the more you will receive.
